Randy Johnson Spotted Photographing NFL Game

We love an athlete pursuing his off-the-field passions.

In 2014, I was working as a correspondent for MLB.com, and the Diamondbacks hosted a 10th anniversary event celebrating Randy Johnson's perfect game. Before I headed down to meet and interview RJ, the media vets in the press box left me with words of warning. "He's intense. He's short. He's not friendly." Eh, whatever. Pitchers are notoriously intense - ESPECIALLY on their start days. And I didn't need him to be my best friend. Just needed him to answer some questions about retiring 27 batters 10 years ago.

Randy was pleasant. Gave me the same answers I'm sure he's given a million times. But then I asked him: "What have you been up to since retirement?" That's when a switch flipped.

He excitedly recounted his travels to Africa, Asia, Europe. He visited some of the most beautiful and historic sites in the world. He got up close with wildlife and even toured with rock bands. And he captured it all with his camera.

With his resume (and sizable finances), RJ could have retired and not lifted a finger another day in his life. But he pursued his passion in photography. Baseball was a part of his life - not his entire life. And we love to see it.
